Fire Fighting Experience - 19th - 21st April 11
The Rother Valley South Area Assembly Devolved budget supported a Fire Fighting Experience for up to 12 young people. The 12 chosen young people would spend two and a half days at the Rotherham Fire station and undergo some of the training that all potential fire officers would have to do to get into the Fire Service. This course could not have happened if it wasn’t for other partners contributing to the process and giving some of the young people who attended the chance to do so.
The two very warm days were spent suiting the lads up in the uniform, training them how to stand to attention in a line, how to connect and use the hoses, how to take care of the equipment and put it away in the fire truck properly, rescuing someone out of a crashed car on the flat board, climbing up the tower using the ladders to the very top (the views were amazing) and climbing through narrow spaces with the heavy water hose. Phew all I can say is I was exhausted just watching them, however I did get the opportunity to get suited and booted in the uniform my-self to climb up the tower so I could take some photo’s and I got to soak them all through with the hose while they were crawling through the rat cage, which I think they loved.
The third day was spent show casing what they had learned to their parents/guardians which was followed by a presentation to give each young person a certificate.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people for the success of this course.
I would like to thank Sarah, Pete, Shaun, Woody and John, the lovely fire officers who came in on their days off to train the young people for 3 days. I would also like to thank the staff from JADE, Sam and John who picked the young people up and got them into Rotherham for 9am every morning. I know that they had a bit of running around to do to get everyone in the bus. I would also like to thank Amanda for her help with getting the bid together and Richard for filming some of the action during two of the days.
Most importantly I would like to thank the young people who took part in the course. Branden, Ben, Lyncoln, Jay, Jake and Jack you were brilliant and I think your parents/guardians/relatives who attended the show case would agree with me that you worked your little socks off.
Well done and I hope that some of you take up the offer of joining the Fire Cadets.
