Area Chair - Councillor Paul Lakin

Hi, I'm Councillor Paul Lakin and I would like to welcome you to the Wentworth South website.

The Wentworth South Area Assembly has come a long way in the last year. Due to much hard work and enthusiasm from the community, partner agencies (such as South Yorkshire Police, the Rotherham Primary Care Trust and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council services), and my fellow elected members in Wentworth South.

We have made great progress in developing a strong and effective force for joint action and change, in response to community priorities and needs. We're really starting to help improve the quality of life for people all across our area.

In October 2006 we launched the 'new way of working' for our Area Assembly. As a result of this we now have a partnership based Co-ordinating Group to steer the work of the Assembly, and to ensure we achieve agreed goals. The Co-ordinating Group brings together all nine elected members for our three wards, the Primary Care Trust, the Safer Neighbourhood Team, the Fire Service, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Streetpride, and the community representatives from the area. The focus for the Area Assembly is very much about improving services, and responding in a pro-active way to what local people tell us they would like to see improved in their local neighbourhoods.

There have been a significant number of successes and highlights in the last year, including the launch and delivery of our trailblazing 'Smartwater' initiative in which properties at risk of domestic burglary have their property DNA marked. Another major achievement is the continued success of our Young People's Area Assembly.

In the future we are planning to build on our success and make sure we continue to improve the quality of life for people in the Wentworth South area.
