Valley Park Football Tournament
15/3/2008

A five-side football tournament was organised by the Youth Inclusion Project, Groundwork Dearne Valley, Sports Development and the Friends of Valley Park on Saturday the 15th March. 35 youngsters from Thrybergh, East Herringthorpe, Clifton and East Dene attended the event which ran from 10:45am. There were two age groups represented, 14 – 16 and 11 – 13, and the 50p entrance fee to take part went to Sport Relief raising £17.

All the young people who participated were provided with free water, fruit, chocolate and crisps and there were also prizes of water bottles, football socks and Easter Eggs. Jenny Harrison from Groundwork who helped organise the event thanked all those whose hard work had made it possible, and in particular thanked the Big Lottery Fund for there support.

A local parent Grant Toseland from Thrybergh, whose youngster participated in the event, said that it was a ‘good day’ and it was ‘great to see all the youngsters having so much fun’. Councillor Simon Currie who refereed the matches was delighted with the attitude of the young people involved and the amount of respect that was shown to officials suggesting that ‘many professional footballers could learn a lot from the co-operative attitude that the young people displayed’.

Colin Shaw, the vice Chair of the Friends of Valley Park, said that his group were delighted to see the MUGA being so well used on a Saturday morning. The Friends of Valley Park hope that the success of the event can act as a springboard for a weekly multi-sports event in the MUGA.

This regular multi sports event is at a preliminary stage at the moment but keep reading looking at the website and future editions of the Wentworth South Newsletter for an update.
